Small Steps for the Big Picture
By Janice Davis - Updated 02.08.12
A camera, a thought, a stomach full of butterflies, and a chance taken. Jennie Finken, operator of Jennie Finken Photography in Bethlehem Pa., originally a "nine to fiver" and photography enthusiast, is now becoming a recognized name in the world of photography. Three years ago, Jennie was a member of the typical working world; in her spare time, she would tinker with photos and prints, and slowly began to build her own portfolio of photos. She started out small, nothing too extreme; it was just a hobby at that point. She began offering fashion shoots for adults and children hoping to gain some experience and exposure. Then, with word of mouth spreading her name around, she started booking small weddings.
A blessing in disguise came a few years ago when Jennie was released from work by her employer. Instead of letting it get her down, she lunged at the opportunity to concentrate on what she does best, photography. Little did she know, her skills would ultimately lead to photographing one of the hottest bands of today, Maroon 5.
I've known Jennie for some time now and have had the opportunity to watch her grow as a photographer. She has this amazing ability of capturing that special moment and getting the best out of her clients. At first glance, you may only see a portrait or a smile at a wedding, but Jennie can make any moment seem unique. The most intriguing part is her ability to make her photos look simple and genuine, which is reflected by the poses, location, and even wardrobe choices.
I still remember her phone call to me about how Maroon 5 was going to be performing at Lycoming College, and how she would do anything to have the opportunity to capture this concert. She pondered the thought, yet wasn't quite sure how she was going to make it happen. She knew in her heart the opportunity would present itself, and a tweet on twitter was all it took. James Valentine, who plays guitar and vocals for Maroon 5, tweeted about an upcoming marathon he was hosting to raise money for cancer research. Jennie immediately jumped on this tweet and responded, "If I could photograph tomorrow's concert, I will donate the proceeds from the next wedding I book to your cause." James Valentine accepted the offer himself, and Jennie had the opportunity to photograph Maroon 5's concert at Lycoming College on October 26tn, 2011.
Jennie has photographed other famous people, such as singer-song writer Brian White, Brian Pedone from Pedone’s Heavy Hitters, and even the mega country superstar, Keith Urban. She just has this drive to grab at the impossible and make it possible. The unplanned opportunity to capture Maroon 5, gave her the exposure she needed to get her photographs recognized and begin to make her dream a reality.
Jennie Finken Photography is all about learning and developing new ways of photographing the unseen. Like all new artists, she has the desire to make her work stand out from the rest, keeping her goals in clear sight; you can find her doing a photo shoot almost every weekend. If you know what your dreams are, you can photograph them, paint them or even sing them. Jennie Finken, with a small camera and a dream, is always searching for that next "big picture."
Jennie Finken Photography is available for weddings, children photos, and senior portraits. She specializes in fashion shoots and child photography. She travels throughout the Bethlehem, Stroudsburg, and NEPA areas, and is very reasonably priced. View her portraits and latest photo shoots on her website, Jennie Finken Photography, and you can also find her on facebook.
