Harmony - What They Do Best
By Lucia Peregrim - Updated 01.11.12

Harmony Constant was named after a Michael Nesmith song of the same name. The group consists of husband and wife, Mac and Cindy Jackson, along with their newest member, Shawn Caden. Mac provides the vocals, guitar, and harmonica, with Cindy on the piano, lending the backing vocals. Shawn caden joined the band to round out their sound, playing the banjo and mandolin, giving them that "folky" sound. Harmony Constant has been a jouney of love for both Mac and Cindy.

Mac attended West Scranton High school and Penn State University. Along the way he started playing the guitar and singing as a solo artist. Mac was first introduced to Jim Croce's music by his father when he was a child. After which he began singing and started to discover new music on his own. "I remember giving into The Monkee's fad in the summer of '86. I sat down and watched them on MTV, right away I felt drawn to Mike Nesmith. He was only 24 at the time but, he carried himself like a wise man who had the world figured out. Plus he has this subtle humor and an amazing voice," says Mac. After that, Mac dove into many other artists, buying all of their albums, including, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and Papas, and John Denver.

About 10 years ago Mac was at a crossroads in his dating life, he had recently ended a seven year relationship and his dating experience that followed was horrible. Until one day he was in a book store, and noticed this beautiful girl stocking the shelves. They started flirting and he began to notice that she was different from all the other girls, she seemed genuinely interested in what he was saying. The subject of music came up and she taked about being in a band and playing some Michael Nesmith songs. Mac, taken aback to hear this, grabbed and hugged her tight knowing that this was the universe telling him that this girl was the one.

Before Mac met Cindy he had been performing with his buddy Pete Syslo under the name Folklore. After he heard Cindy sing he insisted she come over during their rehearsal so Pete could hear her. She became a great addition to the band. When Pete left they changed their name to Harmony Constant and began looking for other musicians to play with. "It's a lot of work to be the only guitar guy, I'm always on the lookout for a musician who is skilled and dedicated." He found that with Shawn. "He's brilliant when it comes to music and is willing to try anything for the sake of the music." Mac met Shawn at Shawn's father's business about a year ago. Mac noticed a banjo case in the back room and started up a conversation with Shawn. Mac asked him to join the band when they recorded for WVIA radio.

Harmony Constant has been blessed to have played many venues in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area numerous times with tremendous results. They have played everywhere from local bars to Country Clubs to a Stargate Convention in the NY/NJ area. "The audience is always supportive, no matter where we play." This is especially true if you find other musicians to share the experience with. One of the hardest parts of being a band is finding others to play with. Before Mac met Shawn, he was always trying to find like-minded musicians who were dedicated and didn't have baggage. "It's nice to be able to rely on another musician to carry some of the load when performing. The great thing about playing with another musician is that it inspires you to write more or tweak what you've been doing. You're constantly trying to impress the other person. When Shawn comes over he adds a new element to songs I've been playing for years. It opens new avenues to mood and timing I never noticed before. Many people hate rehearsing or recording but I adore every second."

The band is currently unsigned but is always looking to get the attention of the music industry. They promote and pay for recording time themselves. Alot of what they have accomplished so far has been due to the kindness of friends and other musicians. "I realize this is a vocation and I'm compelled to create and try to add to the world in a positive way. It wouldn't stop me if we never get signed but it would sure help to ease some of the pressure." Harmony Constant currently has two songs available on itunes, Amazon, and CdBaby, including "The Story of Us" and "Along Again." They hope to finish recording their first full album later this year.

Go online and check out their songs then, see them live in person on January 13th at the Scranton Cultural Center. They will be playing all of their favorites along with debuting their new songs! For more information about Harmony Constant check them out on Facebook, Myspace, or Reverb Nation.
